The youngest player to homer and steal in a major league debut
In short: Vaughn Grissom did not merely enter the professional ranks; he made an immediate, historic statement. At just twenty-one years old, he achieved a remarkable feat of power and speed that remains a record across both leagues, marking him as one of the most impactful young talents in baseball history.
Born on January 5, 2001, Vaughn Grissom's path to the majors began at Paul J. Hagerty High School in Florida. Before joining the Atlanta Braves during the 2019 draft's 11th round, this prominent player shared a roster with upcoming MLB talent Riley Greene. Choosing professional ball over a commitment to Florida International University, Grissom navigated the minor league system, overcoming a lost season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
His breakthrough occurred on August 10, 2022, when he was called up to replace an injured Orlando Arcia. In his debut at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, Grissom hit a two-run home run over the Green Monster and recorded a stolen base. This performance made him the youngest player in history to accomplish both feats in a single major league debut.
Grissom's career has since been defined by mobility between organizations and roles. After being traded to the Boston Red Sox in late 2023, he faced various injuries, including a groin strain and hamstring issues. By December 9, 2025, he moved to the Los Angeles Angels. Despite the physical tolls of the game—ranging from plantar fasciitis to wrist sprains—Grissom has established himself as a versatile utility player capable of contributing across multiple positions.
His journey highlights the volatile nature of professional baseball: moving from high-school phenom to record-breaking debutant, navigating the complexities of trade deadlines, and managing the recurring physical demands that test even the most promising young talents.
