From business student to Hindi cinema star: the rapid rise of Vedang Raina
In short: Before he was a fixture on Netflix and the Indian box office, Vedang Raina was studying business administration. Discover how a chance encounter with a major director transformed a college performer and guitarist into one of Bollywood's most discussed new talents.
Born on 2 June 2000 in New Delhi, Vedang Raina’s roots trace back to the Kashmiri Pandit community. His family history is marked by the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Srinagar, a period of militant violence that saw his parents move away from their relatives in Rainawari. Raised in Mumbai, Raina attended Jamnabai Narsee School and later earned a BBA from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies.
Raina's path to the screen was not premeditated. While he spent his college years performing at festivals and honing his skills as a guitarist, he had not considered a professional acting career until 2021. That year, he was scouted by director Zoya Akhtar while working as a model. This led to his 2023 debut in the musical teen film The Archies, where he played Reggie Mantle—a role noted by critics for its 'swag'.
His subsequent career has been a mix of critical debate and commercial shifts. In 202\4, he appeared in Vasan Bala's action thriller Jigra alongside Alia Bhatt. While critics noted strong chemistry between the leads, the film struggled at the box office. However, Raina found significant success with the 2026 romantic drama Main Vaapas Aaunga, directed by Imtiaz Ali. Though some critics, such as Anuj Kumar of The Hindu, noted challenges in matching the gravitas of veteran actors like Naseeruddin Shah, the film became a sleeper hit, further establishing his presence in the industry.
