From Kosovo's youth ranks to breaking records in La Liga
In short: He began his journey in the Albanian leagues, but Vedat Muriqi's path led him to the pinnacle of European football. A prolific striker with a unique celebration, Muriqi has evolved from a promising talent into the all-time leading goalscorer for the Kosovo national team.
Born in Prizren on 24 April 1994, Muriqi's early career was defined by a steady ascent through the Balkan leagues. After starting with Liria Prizren, he moved to Albania, securing a contract with Teuta Durrës in early 2013. His physical presence and clinical finishing quickly caught the eye of scouts across Turkey, leading to impactful spells at Giresunspor, Gençlerbirliği, and Çaykur Rizespor.
Muriqi's technical profile has earned him high praise from football legends. Former Turkish international Rüştü Reçber once described him as an 'ideal centre forward,' highlighting his aerial dominance and speed in tight spaces. Similarly, pundit Rıdvan Dilmen noted that Muriqi possesses a rare combination of power, height, and quickness, comparing his versatility to players like Peter Crouch.
His move to La Liga with Mallorca in 2022 marked a period of historic individual achievement. In early 2026, he reached 50 La Liga goals, eventually surpassing the record held by Samuel Eto'o to become Mallorca's all-time leading scorer in the competition. Despite a season that ended in club relegation, Muriqi's personal tally reached 55 goals, proving his status as one of the league's most formidable strikers.
Beyond the pitch, Muriqi is a multilingual figure, fluent in Albanian, Turkish, English, Spanish, and Italian. His international identity is equally complex; while he briefly represented Albania's under-21 side, he ultimately became the cornerstone of the Kosovo national team. In July 2015, he even acquired Turkish citizenship under the name Vedat Muriç.
