This feat made him one of only nine players in league history to amass 30 points in a single quarter.
His peak coincided with the Houston Rockets' success, including a pivotal role in their 1994 championship victory. However, his career was frequently disrupted by off-court controversies. In February 1995, Maxwell was involved in a high-profile incident where he entered the stands to confront a fan, resulting in a 10-game suspension and a $20,000 fine—at the time, the largest penalty in the league's history.
Maxwell's journey was also marked by legal complexities. He faced a lawsuit in 1996 regarding the transmission of herpes, which led to a $592,000 judgment and a subsequent bankruptcy filing. His collegiate legacy at the University of Florida was also complicated; his scoring records were originally erased due to violations involving payments from agents, though the University Athletic Association moved to restore his statistics on September 18, 2025, returning him to the position of the Gators' all-time leading scorer.
