In short: Before the era of three-point specialists, Mitch Richmond redefined offensive efficiency. A six-time All-Star, he combined elite shooting with a relentless ability to slash to the hoop, powering some of the most iconic fast-break offenses in basketball history.

Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on June 30, 1965, Mitchell James Richmond III began his ascent through the collegiate ranks at Moberly Area Community College before making his mark at Kansas State University. During his two years with the Wildcats from 1986 to 1988, Richmond displayed unprecedented scoring prowess, tallying 1,327 points—the highest total for any player in a two-year career at the school. Under his leadership, Kansas State achieved a .692 win percentage and reached the 1988 NCAA Midwest Regional Final.

Richmond entered the NBA in 1988 as the 5th overall pick for the Golden State Warriors. He immediately made an impact, earning the NBA Rookie of the Year award for the 1988–89 season by averaging 22 points per game. He became a cornerstone of the legendary 'Run TMC' offense alongside Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin, a high-octane system that relied on Richmond's ability to complement his teammates' passing and shooting by slashing to the basket.

A prolific scorer throughout his career, Richmond spent seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings, where he was the team's leading scorer every year, averaging at least 21.9 points per game. His accolades include six All-Star selections and an MVP performance at the 1995 All-Star Game in Phoenix. Beyond the NBA, he reached the pinnacle of international play, winning a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and a gold medal with the 'Dream Team III' at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. His enduring legacy was cemented in 2014 with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
