In short: Zach Randolph's career was anything but smooth. From being part of Portland's controversial 'Jail Blazers' era to becoming a franchise icon in Memphis, his journey through the NBA was defined by explosive talent, intense on-court outbursts, and an eventual transformation into a cornerstone of a playoff powerhouse.

Zachary McKenley Randolph, known as "Z-Bo," entered the NBA in 2001 as the 19th overall pick for the Portland Trail Blazers. His early years were marked by volatility; the Blazers earned the moniker "Jail Blazers" due to various off-court and on-court incidents, including Randolph's own arrest for underage drinking in 2002 and a 2003 altercation with teammate Ruben Patterson. Despite this turbulence, his talent was undeniable, earning him the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2004 after signing a six-year, $84-million extension.

A pivotal shift occurred on July 17, 2009, when Randolph was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. It was here that his career reached new heights. He became a two-time NBA All-Star (2010 and 2012) and helped lead the Grizzlies to their first franchise playoff series victory in 2011, notably upsetting the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. His dominance in Memphis was cemented when he was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2011 and later signed a four-year, $71-million extension.

Randolph's longevity and impact were underscored by several milestones. In 2016, he became the Grizzlies' all-time leader in made field goals, surpassing Pau Gasol, and moved into the NBA's top 50 for all-time rebounding. After stints with the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, and Dallas Mavericks, he retired in December 2019. In a tribute to his success, the Grizzlies retired his #50 jersey in 2021, marking the first time the franchise has ever retired a number.
