How a Family of Siblings Built a Pop Career Through YouTube and Tight Harmonies
In short: Originating from El Dorado Hills, California, the Cimorelli sisters rose to fame by mastering the art of the viral cover song. Transitioning from a family vocal group to independent artists, they have navigated major label contracts, internal lineup changes, and a commitment to their faith while building a dedicated global following.
The group was founded in 2007 by siblings Christina, Katherine, Lisa, Amy, and Lauren, along with their brother Mike Jr. Initially performing locally, they gained significant traction after uploading a cover of 'Party in the U.S.A.' in 2009. This success led to a signing with Island Records and Republic Records, prompting a move from their hometown to Malibu. The lineup evolved over time; Mike Jr. departed in 2008, while their youngest sister, Dani, joined in 2010 and remained until 2020.
Cimorelli’s musical identity is rooted in family-friendly pop, characterized by intricate vocal harmonies and the integration of piano, guitar, drums, and bass. Their creative process is highly collaborative, with members contributing as songwriters, producers, and arrangers. Beyond their music, the sisters are known for their strong Catholic faith, which influences their personal values and lyrical themes. This commitment has occasionally placed them in the public eye regarding social issues, such as their support for the pro-life movement and their public defense of Catholic perspectives.
The group’s career trajectory shifted in 2015 when they transitioned to becoming independent artists. This move allowed for greater creative control, as seen in their 2017 album 'Sad Girls Club,' which introduced a new concept featuring solo tracks from each sister. Throughout their career, they have faced various personal challenges, including health conditions like mosaic Turner syndrome, brachydactyly, and various pregnancy-related complications. Despite these hurdles, they have maintained a prolific output, releasing nine extended plays, three full-length albums, and a mixtape, all while continuing to reside and work together as a family unit.
