How a family wedding band from California conquered the UK music charts
In short: Before they were Grammy-nominated rock stars, the Haim sisters spent their childhood playing cover songs at local charity fairs. From their humble beginnings in a San Fernando Valley deli to topping the UK album charts, the trio transformed their wedding-band roots into a globally recognized, critically acclaimed musical force.
The band consists of sisters Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, who were raised in a musical household in California. Their parents, Moti and Donna, fronted a family cover band called Rockinhaim, which performed at local community events. This early exposure to 1970s classic rock and Americana provided the foundation for the sisters' musical development. While the sisters formed Haim in 2007, they did not immediately pursue it as a full-time career, as they were occupied with individual projects and education. It was not until 2012 that the group reformed as a professional operation, following Danielle's successful stint as a touring guitarist for artists like Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas.
The group's breakthrough came with their debut EP, Forever, which gained significant traction after a series of performances at the South by Southwest festival in 2012. Their debut studio album, Days Are Gone, released in 2013, achieved massive success in the United Kingdom, reaching the number-one spot on the charts. Critics have often noted the band's ability to blend R&B influences with 1970s soft rock, a sound that has evolved significantly over their subsequent releases. By the time they released their third album, Women in Music Pt. III, in 2020, they had earned a nomination for Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the first all-female rock band to achieve this distinction.
Beyond their studio recordings, Haim is well-known for their distinct live performances and music videos. Este, the eldest sister, is noted for her role as the band's onstage MC and her expressive playing style, while the band's videos frequently feature the members walking through Los Angeles in long, continuous takes. Despite early skepticism from some critics who questioned the depth of their sound, the band has consistently garnered acclaim for their songwriting and musicianship. Their fourth studio album, I Quit, was released in June 2025, continuing their trajectory as a prominent fixture in modern rock music.
