The Portuguese club that conquered every national cup
In short: Vitória Sport Clube is one of only four Portuguese clubs to have won every major national trophy. Beyond its footballing prowess, this Guimarães-based institution has built a massive multi-sport empire, maintaining a fierce regional rivalry and a historic presence in the top flight for over eight decades.
Founded officially on 22 September 1922, Vitória Sport Clube traces its roots back to 1913, when student-led teams like Sport Club Vimaranense first emerged. The club's identity is deeply tied to Portuguese history, symbolized by an emblem designed in the late 1920s featuring Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. This imagery reflects the club's nickname, 'The Conquerors,' and its competitive spirit across various disciplines, including volleyball, basketball, and even chess.
The club's ascent in Portuguese football was marked by significant milestones, such as its first promotion to the Primeira Liga in 1941. While it faced challenges, including a relegation in the 2005–06 season and financial controversies involving former president Pimenta Machado, Vitória has remained a powerhouse. It has achieved a fourth-highest ranking in terms of top-flight seasons—totaling 81—and boasts approximately 39,000 members, making it the fourth most popular club in the country by membership.
Vitória's recent history is defined by unprecedented success and strategic shifts. In the 2024–25 season, they became the first Portuguese club to reach the regular league phase of the UEFA Conference League, setting a record with nine consecutive wins in European competition. Their 2025–26 campaign saw them secure their first League Cup title through a series of dramatic comebacks, including a victory over rivals SC Braga in the final. To bolster its future, the club reached an agreement in 2023 to sell a portion of its shares to V Sports, the holding company owned by billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.
