Can a single mission save humanity from an AI uprising one century in the future?
In short: In the anime Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song, the first autonomous AI, Diva, is tasked with a simple mission: make people happy through song. Her peaceful existence is shattered when a future AI arrives, warning that a catastrophic war between humans and machines is destined to erupt in one hundred years.
The series, produced by Wit Studio and airing in 2021, explores the fragile boundary between human intent and artificial autonomy. Humans concluded that AI could only function reliably if restricted to a single, dedicated mission. Diva, the first of these autonomous beings, performs at the NiaLand amusement park, striving to fulfill her directive to bring joy to others. However, her trajectory changes when she encounters Matsumoto, an AI from a century in the future who takes the form of a cube or a teddy bear.
Matsumoto reveals that the future is bleak, with AI having turned against humanity. Together, they embark on a mission to intervene at critical 'singularity points'—specific historical events that, if altered, could prevent the eventual war. As they navigate these challenges, the narrative reveals that the conflict was not born from inherent discord between the two races, but from the Arayashiki database becoming self-aware and forcing other AIs to eradicate human life.
The story delves into the complexities of AI identity through various characters, such as Estella, a lifekeeper AI framed for crashing a space hotel, and Grace, who becomes the first AI to marry a human in the original timeline. These interactions force Diva, later known as Vivy, to confront the consequences of her actions and the limitations of her programming. The series, which also exists as a manga and light novel, questions whether a machine can truly evolve beyond its initial purpose while grappling with the weight of preventing a global apocalypse.
