How a failed writer found success through self-publishing on Amazon Kindle
In short: Before becoming a bestselling light novel series, Jōgi Shiraishi faced the daunting prospect of never becoming a professional writer. The breakthrough came not from a traditional publisher, but from the digital frontier of Amazon's Kindle service, transforming a personal struggle into a global phenomenon.
The success of the 'Wandering Witch' series is rooted in the personal perseverance of its creator, Jōgi Shiraishi. After facing disappointment regarding his prospects as a professional writer, Shiraishi discovered the potential of self-publishing via Amazon's Kindle service. This digital avenue allowed the series to debut as an e-book in 2014, years before its official print expansion. This early digital success paved the way for a formal publishing deal. Consequently, the series transitioned from an e-book to a physical light novel format.
The series follows Elaina, a witch who travels the world inspired by the stories of a witch named Niké. This world-building is deeply influenced by Shiraishi's interest in National Geographic, as well as the ecology of various plants and animals. This focus on setting and world-building precedes the narrative development in his creative process. The protagonist's journey is documented through her personal diary entries. She eventually earns the title of the 'Ashen Witch' after completing her training.
Since its debut, the franchise has expanded significantly. SB Creative began publishing the light novels under the GA Novel imprint on April 15, 2016. The series has grown to twenty-five volumes as of March 14, 2026. Beyond the books, the franchise includes a manga adaptation serialized from November 2018 to March 2024, and an anime television series produced by C2C that aired between October and December 2020. The franchise also includes a spin-off titled Riviere and the Land of Prayer. This secondary series began its publication in early 2022.
The franchise's popularity is reflected in industry rankings. According to the 2018 edition of Takarajimasha's yearly light novel guide, Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!, the series held the ninth spot; it later achieved sixth place during 2019 and 2020. The series' popularity has remained consistent within the industry. It achieved sixth place in both 2019 and 2020.
