In short: In 2017, a televised competition transformed 101 trainees into a global sensation. Wanna One didn't just debut; they became the first group since 1992 to sell a million copies of their debut album, proving the immense power of audience-driven stardom.

CJ E&M established Wanna One following Produce 101's second season, creating an eleven-member unit chosen by real-time viewer votes. The lineup featured several performers with existing industry footprints, such as Hwang Min-hyun, who had debuted with NU'EST in 2012, and Ha Sung-woon, who debuted with Hotshot in 2014. The group officially debuted on August 7, 2017, at the Gocheok Sky Dome. The roster also included child actor Park Ji-hoon and Kim Jae-hwan, who previously competed on Korea's Got Talent. Other members included Kang Daniel, Park Woo-jin, Lee Dae-hwi, Kim Jae-hwan, Ong Seong-wu, Yoon Ji-sung, Park Ji-hoon, and Bae Jin-young, alongside Lai Kuan-lin.

The group's commercial impact was immediate and historic. By releasing a repackaged album in November 2017, they became only the third Korean group to achieve one million sales for a debut, a feat not seen since Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992. Their influence extended into the corporate sector, where they topped brand power rankings for four months and appeared in 16 different advertising campaigns ranging from cosmetics to mobile games. Preorders for their second EP, 0+1=1 (I Promise You), climbed above 700,000 units, generating substantial hype. This success followed their initial release of 1x1=1 (To Be One), which featured the hit single 'Energetic'.

Despite their massive success, the group operated under a unique, time-bound structure. Managed by Swing Entertainment, their original contract was set to expire on December 31, 2018. While they embarked on a 13-city world tour titled 'One: The World' and released several studio albums, the group eventually concluded their primary activities as planned. Even after their official disbandment, the members have occasionally reunited for special stages, such as the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards, though individual career paths—including military service and transitions to film directing—have since diverged. The group's influence was reflected in global recognition, including being named Billboard's Best New K-Pop Act of 2017. They also achieved a 'Rookie Grand Slam' in 2018 by winning newcomer awards across several major music ceremonies.
