The teenage prodigy who transformed from a batsman into an international bowling force
In short: In 2017, an 18-year-old arrived on the international stage, setting records for youth. Washington Sundar did more than just participate; he evolved from a pure batsman into a specialist off-spinner, eventually helping India secure major global titles through unexpected brilliance.
Born in Chennai on 5 October 1999, Washington Sundar’s path to cricket stardom was shaped by family legacy. His father, Mani Sundar, was a talented cricketer who nearly played for the Tamil Nadu state team. Interestingly, Washington carries a name honoring P. D. Washington, a retired army officer who provided financial support to Mani during his playing career.
Sundar's technical evolution mirrors that of veteran Ravichandran Ashwin. While he began his journey as a batsman, he transitioned into a right-arm off-spinner. This versatility allowed him to make a massive impact during the 2020–21 tour of Australia. Originally brought only as a net bowler, he earned his first Test cap on 15 January 2021 at The Gabba due to pandemic-related travel restrictions. In that match, he famously dismissed Steve Smith and scored 62 runs, becoming only the third Indian player to achieve a half-century on Test debut in Australia.
His career has been defined by high-pressure milestones. After becoming the youngest Indian to debut in T20Is at just 18 years and 80 days old, he went on to win the Player of the Series at the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. His trophy cabinet grew significantly with victories in the 2023 Asia Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. From his early days in the Ranji Trophy in 2016 to becoming a mainstay in the Indian squad, Sundar has proven that adaptability is the ultimate asset in modern cricket.
