From World War 4 to indie rock's most hypnotic psychedelic force
In short: On Valentine's Day 2004, a group of Los Angeles friends formed a band that would eventually redefine dream pop. Originally operating under the name World War 4, they underwent a metamorphosis that transformed their experimental jams into a globally acclaimed, multi-album career.
The origins of Warpaint are rooted in the tight-knit social circles of Los Angeles. The band was founded on February 14, 2004, by childhood friends Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokal, alongside sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannyn Sossamon. For the first three years, the group focused on developing a repertoire of songs like "Stars" and "Beetles." It was only after composing a track titled "Warpaint" that the group abandoned their original moniker, World War 4, adopting the name we recognize today.
The band's sonic evolution has been marked by significant lineup shifts and stylistic experimentation. While the early years featured Sossamon on drums, the arrival of Australian drummer Stella Mozgawa in the winter of 2009 solidified the definitive lineup. This era saw the band move from the self-released, lo-fi energy of their debut EP, Exquisite Corpse, toward a more expansive, lushly-harmonic sound. By the time they released their second studio album in 2014, the group was intentionally embracing a more minimalist, keyboard-based approach, incorporating elements of R&B and ambient textures.
Warpaint's influence extends far beyond the indie club circuit. Their discography, including albums like The Fool and Radiate Like This, has been supported by high-profile collaborators and tours, ranging from opening for Depeche Mode to performing at the Hollywood Bowl. Their ability to blend art rock, dream pop, and psychedelic rock has earned them comparisons to legends like the Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie and the Banshees, proving that their improvisational 'jamming' method could produce enduring, structured art.
