In short: She began as a sidekick seeking vengeance for her father, but Janet van Dyne became a cornerstone of Marvel history. From naming the Avengers to leading them through cosmic wars, the Wasp transformed from a resourceful underpowered hero into one of the most formidable leaders in the superhero pantheon.

Debuting in June 1963 in Tales to Astonish #44, Janet van Dyne was created by Stan Lee, Ernie Hart, and Jack Kirby. Originally the partner of Hank Pym, her superhero persona was born from a desire to avenge her father, the scientist Vernon van Dyne. Initially, her abilities were limited; she relied on resourcefulness, using pins as weapons or even communicating with insects to combat villains like the Porcupine and Egghead.

As her powers evolved, so did her status. Through biochemical procedures and the use of Pym particles, she gained the ability to shrink to several centimeters and fly with insectoid wings. Later, her abilities expanded to include discharging bio-electrical energy blasts, known as 'wasp's stings.' This evolution mirrored her leadership trajectory. A founding member of the Avengers, Janet actually provided the team with its iconic name. While she was once considered the 'weak link' due to her lower power levels, she eventually became one of the team's most intelligent and tactically sound commanders.

Her leadership was marked by significant shifts in team composition. During her tenure as leader, which included a notable period from 1982 to 1987, she actively worked to increase female representation, recruiting members like She-Hulk and Captain Marvel. Her personal life was equally turbulent, involving a complex marriage and divorce from Hank Pym, and a brief romance with Tony Stark. Her storied career faced a tragic end during the Skrull invasion; after being manipulated by a Skrull impostor of Pym, she became a living 'bio-bomb' and was seemingly dispersed by Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, to prevent a catastrophe.
