In short: In 1993, Warrick Dunn’s life changed forever when his mother was murdered while working an off-duty security job. Instead of bitterness, Dunn chose a path of leadership and radical grace, transforming his personal grief into a massive charitable engine that has helped hundreds of families find stability.

Warrick Dunn’s journey from the football fields of Florida State to the NFL was marked by profound resilience. While playing for the Seminoles, he helped the team secure a national championship in 1993. Tragically, his mother, Betty Smothers, a Baton Rouge police officer, died just two days following his eighteenth birthday in January 1993. This tragedy forced Dunn to become the head of his family, raising his siblings during his formative years.

His ability to move past trauma was exemplified when he met one of his mother's killers, Kevan Brumfield, and offered him forgiveness. This spirit of service extended into his professional career. As a running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons, Dunn was a standout performer, earning three Pro Bowl selections and being named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1997. He finished his career with 9,461 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns.

Beyond the yardage, Dunn’s impact is measured by his philanthropy. In 1997, he established the Homes for the Holidays program, and in 2002, he founded Warrick Dunn Charities. These organizations partner with Habitat for Humanity to provide single-parent families with home furnishings and down-payment assistance. By 2012, the program had assisted over 150 single parents and 300 dependents. His civic leadership was so significant that he received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2005 and the Bart Starr Award in 2009.

Dunn's influence reached even higher levels of social mobilization. Following Hurricane Katrina, he challenged fellow NFL players to donate at least $5,000 to relief efforts, a call that resulted in over $5 million in contributions. His life remains a testament to the idea that excellence on the field can be matched by an even greater commitment to human dignity and community support.
