In short: During the Spanish Civil War, the Nationalist faction launched a methodical campaign of mass executions, imprisonment, and social purging. Unlike the spontaneous violence seen elsewhere, this repression was an organized, state-led policy designed to eliminate anyone deemed an enemy of the new fascist order, from intellectuals to rural peasants.

The White Terror, or Francoist Repression, was not merely a byproduct of combat but a core ideological pillar of the Nationalist movement. Beginning with the July 1936 military coup, the regime sought to 'disinfect' Spain by systematically targeting supporters of the Second Spanish Republic, including socialists, liberals, Freemasons, and regional nationalists. Historians like Paul Preston and Antony Beevor agree that while violence occurred on both sides, the Nationalist killings were planned, cold, and approved by high-ranking authorities, whereas Republican-side violence often stemmed from societal breakdown.

Central to this policy was the concept of limpieza social, or social cleansing. Nationalist leaders, including General Emilio Mola, explicitly advocated for terror as a necessary tool to master the population. This was reinforced by the Law of Political Responsibilities, which provided a legalistic framework for punishing dissenters long after the war ended in 1939. The regime viewed its opponents not just as political rivals, but as a 'virus' or 'inferior beings' that threatened the nation's spiritual and racial purity. This dehumanization extended to the peasantry, who were sometimes hunted in 'agrarian reform' parties, and to the Catalan people, whom officials compared to a race of Jews.

The scale of the repression was immense, involving public executions, concentration camps, and the forced confinement of homosexuals in psychiatric hospitals. The Catholic Church often framed these actions as a defense of Christendom, while internal reports from military prosecutors compared their methods to German National Socialist procedures. By the time Franco’s 36-year rule ended in 1975, the systematic eradication of the 'anti-Spanish' element had fundamentally reshaped the country, leaving a legacy of mass graves and deep-seated trauma that some scholars have characterized as a genocide.
