How a brutal Balkan guerrilla war forced the Axis to tie down massive resources.
In short: In 1941, Axis forces invaded Yugoslavia, triggering a vicious four-year conflict. Beyond the initial conquest, the region descended into a complex web of civil war and resistance. By forcing the Axis to garrison hundreds of thousands of troops, the Yugoslav partisans significantly altered the strategic landscape of the Second World War.
The invasion began on 6 April 1941, when German forces, supported by Hungarian and Bulgarian troops, attacked Yugoslavia. Hitler’s primary motivation was to overthrow a pro-Allied government that had recently seized power and to secure his Balkan flank before the planned invasion of the Soviet Union. By 17 April, the country had capitulated, leading to its dismemberment and the creation of a Nazi puppet state in Croatia.
Resistance emerged in two main factions: the Serbian royalist Chetniks, led by Dragoljub Mihailovic, and the communist-led Partisans, commanded by Josip Broz, known as Tito. Initially, Britain supported the Chetniks, but growing evidence of their collaboration with Axis occupiers against the Partisans led the British to switch their allegiance to Tito in December 1943. This struggle was not merely against the invaders; it was a bitter, multi-sided civil war involving various local militias and puppet regimes.
The human cost of this period was staggering, with an estimated 1.2 million deaths in Yugoslavia out of a population of 14 million. Despite the internal violence, the resistance movements—aided by British SOE agents and commandos—conducted relentless sabotage and raids. These actions forced the Axis to maintain a massive military presence in the region, preventing those soldiers from being deployed to other critical fronts. By August 1944, as the Soviet Red Army advanced, the Germans retreated, and Tito’s forces successfully liberated Belgrade.
