In short: In 1963, a disagreement over a championship match led a group of promoters to break away from the established wrestling order. This act of secession birthed the WWWF, the ancestor of today's WWE, and established the most prestigious title in professional wrestling history.

The origins of the WWE Championship lie in a 1963 power struggle within the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). Following a match on January 24 where Lou Thesz defeated Buddy Rogers, the Capitol Wrestling Corporation executives disputed the legitimacy of the title change. They claimed the title could only be contested in a two-out-of-three falls match. Consequently, they seceded from the NWA to form the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), crowning Rogers as their inaugural champion after a purported tournament victory in Rio de Janeiro.

The championship's history is a complex web of rejoining and leaving the NWA. While the promotion briefly regained NWA recognition in 1971, it lost its 'world' status because of the affiliation. It wasn't until 1983, after a conclusive departure from the NWA, that the title regained its global prestige. Over the decades, the belt has undergone numerous transformations, from the WWF Championship to the Undisputed WWE Championship, often reflecting the company's shifting brand landscape and acquisitions.

The title's lineage has been shaped by massive industry shifts, most notably the 2001 purchase of WCW. This era saw the unification of the original championship with the WCW title, creating the Undisputed WWF Championship. More recently, the title has navigated 'brand splits' that moved it between the Raw and SmackDown rosters. As of April 2024, the title is known as the Undisputed WWE Championship, following the deactivation of the Universal Championship lineage.
