From K-pop trainee to Chinese drama star: the multifaceted journey of Yan An
In short: Born in Japan and raised in Shanghai, Yan An has navigated the complex worlds of South Korean idol training and Chinese television. From his 2016 debut with Pentagon to his recent leading roles, his career reflects the fluid boundaries of modern East Asian entertainment.
Yan An's path to stardom began in 2014 when he passed the overseas selection for the Cube Star World Audition, becoming a trainee under Cube Entertainment. This rigorous training eventually led to his musical debut on July 10, 2016, as a vocalist and dancer for the South Korean boy group Pentagon. Interestingly, his inclusion in the group was a twist of fate; despite being eliminated during the variety show 'Pentagon Maker,' he was ultimately added to the final lineup alongside members E'Dawn and Shinwon.
His career has been marked by periods of intense activity and significant hiatuses. In July 2019, medical reasons prevented him from participating in Pentagon's 'Prism' world tour, leading to a 440-day hiatus that ended on September 17, 2020. Following another hiatus starting in February 2022, Yan officially departed Cube Entertainment in October 2023, alongside several fellow Pentagon members. However, the group itself was not slated for disbandment at that time.
In recent years, Yan has successfully transitioned into acting within the Chinese television industry. He made his acting debut in the 2021 series 'Use for My Talent' as Shi Junjie. Since then, he has taken on increasingly prominent roles, such as the antagonist Li Lun in the 2024 series 'Fangs of Fortune' and the role of Hua Rongjian in 'Hidden Shadow.' His momentum continued with the announcement of his first leading role as Lu Zhuo in the drama 'Where the Mask Ends,' scheduled for December 2025.
