From defection to stardom: the resilient journey of Cuban baseball star Yandy Díaz
In short: After two failed attempts and an arrest by the Cuban government, Yandy Díaz finally escaped to pursue his dreams. Today, the Afro-Cuban first baseman is a cornerstone of the Tampa Bay Rays, proving that the path from defection to Major League stardom is paved with immense perseverance.
Yandy Díaz’s ascent to Major League Baseball prominence began with a high-stakes escape. In 2013, at age 21, he defected from Holguin, Cuba, to the Dominican Republic alongside his childhood friend Leandro Linares. This successful flight followed two previous attempts to leave the country, both of which resulted in his arrest by the Cuban government.
Following his defection, Díaz signed with the Cleveland Indians on September 20, 2013, for $300,000. His climb through the minor leagues was rapid; by 2016, he had earned the International League Rookie of the Year Award while playing for the Columbus Clippers. After proving his worth during the 2017 spring training, he secured a starting role at third base for the Cleveland Indians.
A pivotal trade on December 13, 2018, moved Díaz from Cleveland to the Tampa Bay Rays, a move that would define his career. He has since become an elite offensive force, winning a Silver Slugger Award and becoming a two-time All-Star. In 2023, he achieved a rare feat for Cuban-born players by winning the American League batting title with a .330 average.
Díaz's success carries deep personal significance. When they last met, Yandy was just six years old; his father, Jorge, had also left Cuba for the US to pursue professional baseball. Díaz has become the third player born in Cuba to secure a batting title, after Yuli Gurriel and Tony Oliva.
