A legend reborn: How Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties reshaped a classic story
In short: Released in February 2026, this dual-campaign title reimagines the 2009 classic Yakuza 3 while introducing a dark, standalone prequel. By blending Kazuma Kiryu’s orphanage life with the ruthless rise of antagonist Yoshitaka Mine, the game offers a controversial, modernized look at one of the most storied entries in the franchise.
Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties serves as both a remake and a narrative expansion. While Kiwami 3 updates the original 2009 title with new cutscenes and refined combat styles—including the Okinawan-inspired Ryukyu style—it also alters key story beats. Producer Ryosuke Horii noted that the team aimed to address the 'rough edges' of the original, specifically expanding the 'Life at Morning Glory' side content to better establish Kiryu’s role as a father figure. However, these changes, alongside the removal of some original content, drew mixed reactions from critics and fans alike.
The companion title, Dark Ties, shifts the focus to Yoshitaka Mine, a major antagonist from the original game. Originally envisioned as a bonus scene, it evolved into a full campaign that chronicles Mine’s transition from a failed entrepreneur to a powerful yakuza. Written by Kazunobu Takeuchi, the story explores Mine’s internal monologue and his search for genuine bonds within the underworld. Unlike Kiryu’s multi-style combat, Mine utilizes a singular, aggressive boxing-based style, complemented by a 'Dark Awakening' mode that allows for relentless, high-powered combos.
The project faced significant scrutiny regarding its casting choices. The inclusion of Teruyuki Kagawa as the character Hamazaki sparked backlash due to the actor's 2019 sexual misconduct allegations. While some fans demanded a recast, the studio defended the decision, citing Kagawa’s ability to portray a convincing villain. This controversy, paired with debates over the game's altered narrative and visual quality, highlights the tension between modernizing a beloved classic and preserving its original spirit. As the final entry in the Kiwami series, the game marks a turning point for the franchise, signaling a shift toward new, distinct directions for future titles.
