How Yannick Ngakoue became one of the NFL's most prolific modern pass rushers
In short: Born in Washington, D.C., Yannick Ngakoue transformed from a standout high school athlete into a relentless NFL defensive force. Known for his ability to disrupt quarterbacks, he has navigated a high-profile career across multiple franchises, leaving a trail of sacks and forced fumbles throughout his professional journey in the league.
Yannick Ngakoue’s path to the NFL began at the University of Maryland, where he set a school record with 13.5 sacks during his junior season in 2015. His professional career launched in 2016 when the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the third round of the NFL draft. As a rookie, he immediately made an impact, recording eight sacks—a Jaguars rookie record at the time—and earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. His early years in Jacksonville were defined by the team's dominant defensive line, which adopted the nickname "Sacksonville" during a successful 2017 campaign where Ngakoue recorded 12 sacks and a league-leading six forced fumbles.
The latter half of Ngakoue’s career has been marked by significant mobility across the league. Following a public trade request in 2020, he embarked on a series of moves that saw him play for the Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears. His production remained consistent despite these transitions; for instance, he led the Raiders in sacks during the 2021 season, marking his first double-digit sack performance since 2017. His tenure with the Colts in 2022 also saw him lead the team with 9.5 sacks before a throat injury sidelined him late in the year.
Ngakoue’s career reflects the high-stakes nature of professional football, where elite defensive specialists are frequently traded to bolster team rosters. His 2024 season included stints with the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots, demonstrating his continued role as a veteran presence on the field. Throughout his journey, from his debut sack against Philip Rivers in 2016 to his contributions in 2024, Ngakoue has maintained a reputation as a disruptive force, consistently pressuring quarterbacks and forcing turnovers across his various team assignments.
