How a single spin-off became one of India's longest-running television soaps
In short: Spanning over four years and multiple generations, Yeh Hai Chahatein explores the complexities of destiny. From a rock star's romance to complicated love triangles involving IAS officers, this Star Plus drama weaves a sprawling saga of soulmates and reincarnation that captivated audiences from 2019 until 2024.
Produced by Ekta Kapoor for Star Plus, Yeh Hai Chahatein (meaning 'This Is Desire') is a Hindi-language drama that serves as a spin-off to the series Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. The show's narrative is defined by its generational scope, following characters through significant time jumps that test the endurance of their connections. The production was originally released on Disney+ Hotstar. It functions as a direct extension of its predecessor.
The story begins with the passionate romance between rock star Rudraksh Khurana and gynaecologist Dr. Preesha Srinivasan. After raising a sibling's son together, the pair dies with a promise to reunite as soulmates in every lifetime. This theme of reincarnation sets the stage for the series' subsequent eras. The central couple's bond is forged while caring for their brother's child. This spiritual pact drives the entire plot forward.
The timeline shifts twenty years later to introduce Dr. Nayantara, a reserved physiotherapist, and the famous rock star Samrat. Another twenty-year leap brings the story to Kaashvi, the daughter of Nayantara and Samrat. Her journey involves a complex love triangle with her childhood friend Arjun and Mahima, eventually leading to a marriage strained by insecurities. The narrative follows Kaashvi's struggle to maintain her marriage to Arjun. This third era introduces intense emotional conflict.
To depict various time periods, the show employs a shifting cast of protagonists, such as Pravisht Mishra, Shagun Sharma, Abrar Qazi, and Sargun Kaur Luthra. By blending high-stakes romance with themes of destiny and family duty, the show secured its place as one of the longest-running soap operas in Indian television history. The ensemble features various actors playing roles across different years. This structure highlights the show's epic scale.
