How a single postcard inspired twenty-five years of multimedia art
Explore the personal journey of artist Yassaman Ameri as she discusses her series, The Inheritance. This talk examines how a family heirloom shaped a decades-long investigation into Qajar-era imagery and its connection to the work of Antoin Sevruguin.
The video documents the creation of The Inheritance, a collection developed by Ameri over a 25-year period. The project originated from a gift: a postcard featuring 36 faded, small portraits of mostly unveiled women from Iran's Qajar era.
By examining the relationship between various Qajar imagery sources, Ameri offers a new perspective on the assumptions present in the work of Antoin Sevruguin. The presentation, which aired in December 2021, includes a discussion with curator Tasha Vorderstrasse regarding the intentions behind Ameri's artistic choices.
