A master of sci-fi shifts toward dark fantasy architecture
In short: Tsutomu Nihei is renowned for his sprawling, desolate science fiction. Now, he is applying that same atmospheric worldbuilding to a grim fantasy setting. In Tower Dungeon, the focus shifts from futuristic ruins to a monolithic tower filled with mutated horrors and impossible geometry.
Tsutomu Nihei, the creator of the influential manga Blame!, has pivoted his creative focus toward dark fantasy with Tower Dungeon. Serialized in Monthly Shōnen Sirius beginning in October 2023, the series follows a group of soldiers and a drafted farmhand named Yuva. Their objective is to rescue a princess from a massive tower seized by a necromancer who assassinated the king. This transition marks a significant evolution for Nihei, who retains his signature monster designs and atmospheric environmental storytelling while adapting to a more organic, RPG-inspired premise.
The narrative distinguishes itself through the contrast between formal military training and raw, rural resilience. While the Royal Guard’s initial assault on the tower failed, the inclusion of Yuva—a strong but inexperienced villager—provides a different dynamic against the tower's supernatural threats. The interior of the tower is described as a nightmare of twisted architecture, populated by mutated creatures and reanimated fallen soldiers. As the group ascends, they must navigate dwindling resources and increasingly grotesque horrors that defy conventional logic.
The series has seen rapid commercial and critical success since its debut. By August 2026, it had surpassed one million copies in circulation. It received notable recognition, including a 2024 nomination for the tenth Next Manga Award and 2026 nominations at the Japan Expo Awards for Best Drawing and Action Manga. While critics have noted the initial volume's brevity, the work is being praised for its unique blend of Nihei's distinctive visual style with a new, dark fantasy mythology.
The production of the manga also involves high-level collaboration for promotional media. For the sixth volume's promotional video, the agency Maxilla provided special effects, while the studio Keel handled traditional animation. To maintain visual consistency throughout Nihei's fresh universe across various platforms, the team assigned distinct duties: Toshiyuki Kono handled storyboard creation and animated clip direction, whereas character designs were crafted by Asuka Suzuki and creature concepts by Tetsurō Moronuki.
