The quest to build a modern-day Doraemon through Japanese folklore
In short: Level-5 didn't just want to make another hit game; they wanted to create a cultural landmark. By blending ancient Japanese folklore with a modern open-world RPG, they aimed to build a franchise with the enduring legacy of Doraemon. The result was a global phenomenon that turned ghosts into friends.
Developed by the Fukuoka-based studio Level-5, Yo-kai Watch was born from a specific creative ambition. Aiming for enduring popularity, Akihiro Hino, the CEO, intended to produce a game lasting decades, specifically referencing the famous Doraemon series as his primary inspiration. To achieve this, the team pivoted toward an open-world role-playing game structure that could resonate with children while maintaining deep appeal. The game draws its primary inspiration from Yōkai—ghosts and apparitions from Japanese folklore known for causing mischief in daily life. Players take on the role of Nate or Katie, who receive a magical watch from a butler Yo-kai named Whisper. This device allows them to see the invisible world, where they must navigate conflicts caused by 'inspiriting' entities. The narrative moves from local neighborhood problems, like a couple arguing over chores, to a high-stakes geopolitical conflict involving a dissident Yo-kai politician, Squiddilius McKraken, who seeks to subjugate humanity. While the game became a massive success in Japan—selling over one million copies by November 2014—it took two years to reach Western markets. Level-5's strategy involved building a multi-media ecosystem from the start, including a manga series by Noriyuki Konishi that won several prestigious awards. This 'trial and error' approach ensured that by the time the game localized in 2015, it was already a robust franchise with a toy line, anime, and a sequel, successfully bridging the gap between ancient myth and modern gaming.
