The man who gave the Great Depression its anthem and Oz its soul
In short: Most people recognize the melody of "Over the Rainbow," but few know the name of the man who penned its lyrics. Edgar "Yip" Harburg was more than a songwriter; he was a social conscience who turned personal hardship and political activism into some of the most enduring music in history.
Born in Manhattan to Russian Jewish immigrants in 1896, Harburg’s early life was defined by the struggle of poverty. His childhood involved working various jobs, including packing pickles in a factory, selling newspapers, and lighting street lamps along the East River docks. This firsthand experience with economic hardship deeply informed his later work, particularly his ability to blend whimsy with social commentary.
Harburg’s professional trajectory changed significantly following the 1929 stock market crash. After losing his possessions and falling into debt through a failed business venture in electrical appliances, he pivoted entirely to songwriting. He famously remarked that losing his possessions allowed him to find his creativity. His breakthrough came in 1929 through his friendship with Ira Gershwin, who helped him secure professional connections in the Broadway scene.
His legacy is defined by two vastly different yet equally iconic works. Working alongside Jay Gorney in 1932, he composed "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" for the Americana revue, creating a quintessential song representing Great Depression misery. In 1939, he teamed with composer Harold Arlen to write the Academy Award-winning "Over the Rainbow" for The Wizard of Oz. Beyond these hits, Harburg was known for addressing complex themes like feminism and racial inequality in musicals such as Bloomer Girl (1944) and Finian’s Rainbow (1947). His commitment to his political beliefs eventually led to him being blacklisted.
Despite writing more than 600 songs across Broadway and Hollywood, Harburg remains a figure often overlooked by the general public, remembered more for his profound social impact than his own name.
