After 25 years, TED's longtime leader is stepping aside

Chris Anderson: A bold new chapter for TED · 59:05 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: For a quarter-century, Chris Anderson has steered TED through the digital age. Now, the organization is entering a new era of stewardship, following a global search that rejected massive commercial offers in favor of a mission-driven future.

The transition began when Chris Anderson, who has led TED for 25 years, issued an open invitation for a successor. This search, which officially commenced in February, was not merely a search for a new executive but a quest for a 'Vision Steward' capable of scaling TED's impact for decades to come. The process was guided by the advisory firm LionTree and attracted interest from nearly 100 diverse entities, including universities, technology platforms, media organizations, and investor groups.

The stakes were remarkably high; the search even attracted offers to purchase TED outright. However, TED's leadership team rejected for-profit joint ventures and commercial acquisitions to protect the organization's core values. The primary concern was ensuring that the nonprofit status and editorial integrity of TED remained uncompromised by commercial interests or conflicts of interest. The leadership emphasized that the mission—providing free knowledge and protecting the conference experience—must never be sacrificed for profit or scale.

The search concluded with the appointment of Sal Khan, the founder and CEO of Khan Academy, as TED’s new Vision Steward. Khan will join the TED board while maintaining his leadership at Khan Academy, an organization that serves over 170 million registered users across more than 50 languages. His appointment signals a focus on leveraging technology and AI to amplify human possibility, mirroring the pedagogical rigor and global reach he has achieved in the educational nonprofit sector.
