The medieval philosopher who pioneered radical skepticism 500 years before Descartes
In short: Discover how Al-Ghazali dismantled the intellectual foundations of his era by using the philosophers' own logic against them. This video explores his transition from a prominent academic to a wandering mystic.
Al-Ghazali, known in the West as Algazel, fundamentally shifted the medieval world away from Neoplatonic metaphysics. He is notable for formalizing a method of radical skepticism that predated René Descartes by more than five centuries.
In his landmark work 'The Incoherence of the Philosophers,' Al-Ghazali targeted the consensus of thinkers like Aristotle, Plato, Ibn Sina, and Al Farabi. Crucially, he challenged their ideas using methodologies that were internally consistent with their own systems. Following this period of academic disruption, he became a wandering mystic within the Abbasid and Seljuk empires.
