In short: Explore the multifaceted life of Benjamin Franklin, from his satirical beginnings as a pseudonymous writer to his pivotal role in drafting the Declaration of Independence. This overview highlights how he balanced scientific inquiry with revolutionary diplomacy.

Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) was a polymath whose career spanned printing, science, and global diplomacy. Born in Boston as the 10th son of a chandler, his formal education ended at age 10 due to a lack of funds. He was apprenticed to his brother James as a printer, a trade he mastered by 1723 while teaching himself to write through the voracious study of English periodicals.

Franklin gained fame by writing Poor Richard's Almanack and editing The Pennsylvania Gazette. He became a scientific figure through experiments with electricity and served as a key diplomat in London starting in 1757. He helped compose the Declaration of Independence during the American Revolution and secured the peace treaty concluding the conflict. His international stature was so great that he became a focal point of "Franklin-mania" among the French intellectual elite.
