Mapping the growing cloud of human-made and interstellar debris orbiting our planet
In short: Join astrophysicist Jackie Faherty and educator Deion Desir on a virtual flight through space. Using advanced visualization software, they explore the dense field of satellites and interstellar objects currently surrounding us, offering a rare look at the debris we have left behind in the cosmos.
This exploration utilizes Open Space, a specialized software platform designed to render the entire universe in an interactive format. The presentation focuses on the reality of space debris, ranging from human-made satellites like the Starlink constellation to mysterious interstellar visitors such as Borisov and Oumuamua.
By visualizing these data sets, the team highlights the physical presence of objects that often go unseen. This journey provides context for the scale of human activity in orbit compared to the vast interstellar bodies passing through our solar system.
