In short: Chiyou is a shapeshifting enigma of Chinese mythology. To some, he is a terrifying demon god of violence with a bull's head and six arms. To others, he is a sagacious king and a foundational ancestor. This duality defines his legacy, spanning from ancient battlefields to modern pop culture.

In the ancient lore of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, Chiyou was the leader of the Nine Li tribe. Historical accounts, such as the Lushi, suggest he was a descendant of the Flame Emperor. He is most famous for his decade-long conflict against the Yellow Emperor, a struggle that only ended when the Yellow Emperor combined forces with the Yan Emperor to finally defeat him at the Battle of Zhuolu.

The physical descriptions of Chiyou are as varied as his reputation. Legend depicts him with a bronze head, a metal forehead, four eyes, and six arms. Some traditions grant him the head of a bull with two horns and the hindquarters of a bear. He was said to possess mastery over the constellations and the ability to summon weather, famously conjuring a thick fog to obscure the battlefield during his war against the Yellow Emperor. His defeat was so monumental that it is said to have rained blood afterward.

His legacy is deeply polarized. In northern China and some Daoist traditions, he is a demon of chaos and greed, often associated with the Taotie motif on ritual bronzes used to warn against avarice. Yet, for many Hmong and Miao people, he is revered as a sagacious ancestor. This complexity has allowed him to persist as a cultural touchstone, appearing as everything from a god of war worshipped by emperors like Liu Bang to a recurring antagonist in modern video games, comics, and literature.
