In short: Duleep Singh was a child king deposed by the British, exiled to England, and transformed into a Victorian country gentleman. Known as the Black Prince of Perthshire, he navigated a life of immense wealth, religious conversion, and deep, lingering regret over the kingdom he lost as a boy.

Proclaimed Maharaja of the Sikh Empire at age five in 1843, Duleep Singh’s reign was short-lived. Following the First Anglo-Sikh War, the British East India Company deposed him at age ten in 1849. Stripped of his vast property—including the Koh-i-Noor diamond—he was sent into exile in Britain at age 15. Under the guidance of Dr. John Login, he was culturally Anglicized, eventually converting to Christianity in 1853, a move later celebrated by the British as a way to erode his influence among his former subjects.

In England, Duleep Singh was embraced by Queen Victoria, who acted as a godmother to his children. He adopted the lifestyle of an English aristocrat, renting grand estates like Mulgrave Castle and eventually purchasing the 17,000-acre Elveden estate in 1863. Despite his outward assimilation, he struggled with his identity, his forced separation from his mother, and the loss of his heritage. He later expressed profound regret for his conversion, formally reverting to Sikhism in 1886 after an unsuccessful attempt to return to India.

His later years were marked by financial ruin and bitterness toward the British government. After his failed 1886 attempt to reach India—where he was arrested in Aden—he sought alliances with European powers to challenge British rule, though these threats were never taken seriously. He died in Paris in 1893 at age 55. Despite his final wishes, his body was not returned to India; instead, he was buried according to Christian rites in Elveden, a final irony for the man who had once been the sovereign of the Sikh Empire.
