In short: Before she was a Harvard law student, Elle Woods was a teenager navigating a cross-country move and the social hierarchies of Seattle. This prequel explores how her distinct personality and ingenuity were forged long before the courtroom, exploring the formative years that shaped a pop-culture icon.

The series 'Elle' serves as a prequel to the Legally Blonde franchise, specifically exploring the life of Elle Woods during her teenage years in the 1990s. Set six years before the events of the first film, the narrative follows a 16-year-old Elle as she moves from Los Angeles to Seattle. The show aims to illustrate how she navigated her world with her signature personality before her transition to becoming an ambitious law student. The story features her mother, Eva, and her father, a plastic surgeon named Wyatt. Elle also befriends a lesbian student named Liz Miller. She interacts with a mean girl named Kimberly and a British activist named Dustin.

The project emerged in April 2023 after Amazon acquired MGM and sought to expand the franchise following a period of development hell for a third film. The creative spark for the prequel came from Reese Witherspoon, who was inspired by the high school setting of Netflix's 'Wednesday.' Witherspoon wanted to see who Elle was before college, leading to a pitch that eventually resulted in the series being announced on May 14, 2024. Laura Kittrell and Caroline Dries share showrunning duties for the production. The premiere season's initial two parts were filmed under Jason Moore's direction. The production team also includes the author of the original novel, Amanda Brown.

Production began in April 2025, with principal photography taking place in Vancouver at locations like Point Grey Secondary School. The series premiered on July 1, 2026, and was quickly renewed for a second season in January 2026. While the show received mixed reviews from critics—holding a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—it remains a significant case study in using prequel nostalgia to build out the backstory of a beloved character. The show received a weighted average score of 52 out of 100 on Metacritic. Filming for the second season concluded in June 2026. The series was renewed for its next installment just months after its initial debut.
