The invisible force that keeps your body from falling through the floor

In short: You don't actually touch the chair you are sitting on. At a fundamental level, electromagnetic forces are so powerful that they dominate our physical reality, providing the structural integrity of matter while remaining almost entirely invisible to our senses.

While gravity is the most famous force in our daily lives, it is remarkably weak compared to electromagnetism. At the human scale, electromagnetic forces are the primary drivers of physical and chemical properties. They dictate how atoms bond together and how molecules interact. This dominance is so extreme that if two 70-kilogram (154-pound) people stood just two meters apart, the repulsion from a mere one electron out of every billion molecules would generate a staggering 30,000-ton force.

The relationship between electricity and magnetism was once considered a mystery of separate phenomena. It wasn't until the 19th century that scientists began to treat them as interrelated. In 1905, Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity confirmed they are actually two aspects of a single common phenomenon. Despite this unity, they manifest differently in practice: electric forces can be produced by charges at rest or in motion, whereas magnetic forces are exclusively produced by moving charges and only act on other charges that are also in motion.

One of the most profound mechanisms of electromagnetism is the reciprocal relationship between fields. Electric fields can generate magnetic fields and vice versa, even without an external charge present. This was famously demonstrated by Michael Faraday, whose work showed that a changing magnetic field produces an electric field. This principle remains the foundation for modern power generation, allowing us to convert motion into the electricity that powers our world.
