In short: Gnaeus Naevius was a fiery, patriotic dramatist who turned the Roman stage into a political battlefield. By mocking the powerful Metellus family, he faced imprisonment and eventually exile to Tunisia. Yet, his legacy remains foundational, as he pioneered the Roman epic and invented a uniquely national style of tragedy.

Active during the third century BC, Gnaeus Naevius was a pivotal figure in the Old Latin period. A veteran of the First Punic War, his work was deeply rooted in Roman identity rather than mere imitation of Greek models. He is credited with creating the fabula praetexta, a genre of tragedy focused on Roman national figures and historical events, such as the victory of Marcus Claudius Marcellus over the Celts in 222 BC.

Naevius was perhaps most famous for his comedies, which he used as a platform for sharp, partisan social commentary. His willingness to attack the aristocracy—including the Metelli and the young Scipio—made him a controversial figure. This combative spirit led to his imprisonment, though he was later released through the intervention of the tribunes. Following a second offense, he was forced into exile in Utica, where he eventually died by suicide.

Beyond his dramas, Naevius transformed Latin literature with his epic poem, Bellum Punicum. By blending the mythical origins of Aeneas with the history of the First Punic War, he established the Roman epic tradition. His narrative style, characterized by vivid, rapid movement and the use of native Saturnian verse, would later influence Virgil. Though his complete works are lost, the fragments preserved by ancient grammarians reveal a writer of immense idiomatic force and nationalistic fervor, securing his place as a foundational architect of the Roman literary canon.
