In short: In the Dzogchen tradition, the ground is the primordial state of every sentient being. It is not a thing to be achieved, but a reality to be recognized. This atemporal, empty consciousness is the source of both samsara and nirvana, yet it remains hidden by the illusion of dualism.

The Dzogchen basis, or gzhi, is described as the primordial state existing before the distinction between enlightened buddhas and ordinary sentient beings ever emerged. Because it transcends time, labels like original or primordial are merely conventional tools rather than historical markers. Tibetan masters like Longchenpa (1308–1364) emphasize that this ground is essentially a groundless ground; it is posited as a foundation only from a relative perspective, while in its true nature, it is empty of any intrinsic substance. It is not a monistic entity or a storehouse of consciousness, but an unfabricated, luminous reality that supports all phenomena without being touched by them, much like space allows for clouds without becoming a cloud itself.

This basis is characterized by three inseparable aspects: Essence, Nature, and Compassion. The Essence, or ka dag, is original purity—an emptiness free from the extremes of nihilism and eternalism. The Nature, or lhun grub, represents spontaneous presence, the luminous potentiality that allows phenomena to manifest. Finally, Compassion, or tukjé, is the energy of this ground, often compared to the reflective capacity of a mirror. These aspects are not separate components but are interdependent, mirroring how a mirror’s clarity, reflective surface, and potential to display images constitute a single, unified object.

Recognizing this basis is the core of Dzogchen practice, often referred to as rigpa. Namkhai Norbu (1938–2018) noted that while this state is fully present in every individual, it remains obscured by the dualistic habits of the mind. Because the basis is not a self-existing entity, it cannot be constructed or gained; it is already immanent. The tradition warns that all metaphors—such as the mirror or the crystal prism—are only partially successful, as the true nature of reality ultimately lies beyond the reach of words, concepts, and the limitations of human language.
