In short: Spanning the 4th to 6th centuries CE, the Gupta Empire is celebrated for profound intellectual and cultural breakthroughs. From advanced metallurgy to the decimal system, their legacy shaped Indian identity, yet modern historians are now re-evaluating whether this era was as singular a 'classical age' as once believed.

The Gupta Dynasty, beginning with Chandragupta I around 320 CE, established a vast empire covering northern, central, and parts of southern India. This period is frequently described as a 'golden age' due to significant advancements in arts, architecture, religion, and philosophy. Notable scientific contributions attributed to this era include the decimal system of notation and progress in astronomy, mathematics, and metallurgy.

The empire's expansion was driven by key rulers. Chandragupta I, who united the Guptas with the Licchavis through marriage, secured access to rich iron ore mines. His son, Samudra Gupta, expanded the territory through military conquest, while Chandragupta II, also known as Vikramaditya, is remembered more for cultural achievements than warfare. Administratively, the empire used a decentralized system, dividing territory into provinces and smaller units called pradeshas or vishayas.

Despite these achievements, the dynasty's dominance was not permanent. Following the rule of successors like Kumara Gupta and Skanda Gupta, the empire faced invasions by the Hunas, a branch of the Hephthalites. By the mid-6th century, the empire had dwindled in size and reached its end. While traditionally viewed as the definitive classical age of India, contemporary historians suggest that many of these assumptions are being challenged by new studies of the period between the Mauryan and Gupta eras.
