The emperor who watched Rome fall from behind marshland walls
In short: While the Visigoths breached the gates of Rome in 410, Emperor Honorius was safely ensconced in the fortified coastal city of Ravenna. His reign was defined by chaos, barbarian incursions, and a fatal decision to execute his most capable general, leaving the Western Roman Empire to fracture.
Honorius ascended to the throne as a ten-year-old in 395, following the death of his father, Theodosius I. His reign was marked by a precarious division of the empire between himself in the West and his brother Arcadius in the East. To manage the increasing barbarian threats, Honorius relied heavily on the military leadership of the general Stilicho, a man of mixed Vandal and Roman ancestry.
The relationship between the emperor and his general was fraught with tension. Despite Stilicho's efforts to defend Italy—including a victory at Pollentia in 402—the political climate in the imperial court turned toxic. In 408, influenced by the minister Olympius, Honorius ordered the arrest and execution of Stilicho, fearing a conspiracy. This purge backfired spectacularly; it led to the massacre of Stilicho's allies and caused his foederati troops to defect en masse to the Visigothic king, Alaric I.
The consequences of this instability were catastrophic. In 410, the Visigoths sacked Rome, the first time the city had fallen to a foreign force in nearly 800 years. While the sack was relatively mild regarding physical destruction, the psychological impact was profound, reverberating from Britain to Jerusalem and inspiring Augustine to write 'The City of God'. Honorius spent his remaining years in Ravenna, a city chosen for its defensive marshes, watching as the Western Empire eroded under the weight of continuous incursions and internal revolts.
