In short: Once a medieval dowry for queens and later a massive, never-besieged military fortress, Hradec Králové reinvented itself in the early 20th century. By embracing avant-garde architecture and urban planning, this Czech city shed its martial skin to become an internationally acclaimed cultural hub known as the Salon of the Republic.

The history of Hradec Králové is a series of radical physical and political reorientations. Originally a castle settlement, it flourished in the 14th century as a dowry town for Bohemian queens, including Elizabeth Richeza of Poland. This era established the city as a regional center of culture, but its strategic location at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers eventually invited destruction. During the Thirty Years' War, the city was repeatedly conquered and left nearly depopulated, only to be later reshaped into a massive Baroque fortress in the late 18th century.

The fortress era, initiated by Joseph II in 1766, fundamentally altered the city's geography. Massive walls were constructed, riverbeds were diverted, and suburbs were demolished to accommodate a defense infrastructure that occupied 320 hectares. Paradoxically, this fortress was never used in war. Its eventual abolition in 1884 triggered a dramatic urban renewal. Between 1893 and 1914, the fortifications were demolished, clearing the way for a modern city that prioritized aesthetic and functional design over military utility.

The city's transformation into the 'Salon of the Republic' was driven by visionary architects like Jan Kotěra and his pupil Josef Gočár. Their work in the 1920s and 1930s introduced Art Nouveau and Functionalist styles, creating a cohesive urban identity that earned international praise. Today, the city preserves this legacy alongside its medieval roots, such as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, which stands as the only Gothic church to survive the 18th-century fortress construction. From a site of military confinement, Hradec Králové has evolved into a vibrant center for education, music, and theatre.
