In short: Horia Sima rose from a provincial logic teacher to the leader of the Iron Guard, orchestrating one of history's most violent pogroms. Despite being sentenced to death multiple times, he spent decades in exile, reinventing himself as an anti-communist crusader while his own movement fractured under accusations of incompetence and betrayal.

Born in 1906, Horia Sima began his career teaching philosophy and Latin in rural Romania. By 1927, he had joined the Iron Guard, a nationalist paramilitary movement. Following the imprisonment and murder of the group's founder, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Sima maneuvered through the organization's hierarchy to seize control by late 1938. His ascent was marked by political violence, including the 1939 assassination of Prime Minister Armand Călinescu, which signaled his ruthless commitment to seizing state power.

In 1940, Sima became deputy prime minister in the National Legionary State, an uneasy alliance with General Ion Antonescu. His tenure was defined by state-sanctioned antisemitism and the January 1941 Legionnaires' Rebellion. During this uprising, Sima's forces carried out the Bucharest pogrom, a campaign of torture and murder so extreme that victims were found skinned in a local slaughterhouse. When Hitler eventually backed Antonescu over the Guard, Sima fled the country, narrowly escaping imprisonment by disguising himself as an SS officer.

Sima’s later years were defined by persistent factionalism and exile. While interned in Buchenwald, he faced open revolt from his own followers, who labeled him a 'terrorist' and a 'dilettante.' Despite being sentenced to death in absentia by Romanian tribunals in 1946, he spent his final decades in Spain, publishing ideological tracts and attempting to rebrand his legacy as a champion of anti-communism. He died in 1993, leaving behind a fractured movement and a history of brutal political failure.
