Is the term investment banker actually a synonym for something toxic?

Images and Illusions of Investment Banking: This Is Not My Beautiful House - David Weaver · 56:53 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: To many, the phrase 'investment banker' has become a label for anything perceived as bad. But does the industry's actual definition support this reputation, or is there a fundamental misunderstanding of how wholesale bankers create value in the global markets?

In his 2013 Sir Thomas Gresham Docklands Lecture, David Weaver, a veteran of Wall Street since 1982, addressed the growing public hostility toward investment banking. He noted that the term had become 'pretty toxic,' often used as a catch-all for negative actors. Weaver’s central thesis, however, challenges this perception, arguing that when properly defined, investment banking is a value-adding, non-destructive force that serves its clients through specialized expertise.

The confusion often stems from a failure to distinguish between different types of financial institutions. Weaver recounts an early career error where he mistook First Boston, an investment bank in New York, for a commercial bank in Boston. Historically, in the United States, these roles were strictly separated by legislation dating back to the 1930s. While commercial banks use their own capital and depositor funds to provide loans, investment banks focus on market-based activities.

To strip away the illusions, Weaver defines the core of investment banking through three pillars: agency-based, advisory-led, and markets-centric. The 'advisory-led' component is particularly vital, as it involves clients paying for specialized knowledge in areas such as Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), the structuring of securities offerings, and corporate research. By acting as an agent in the markets to raise capital and deal in securities, the investment banker functions as a facilitator of market efficiency rather than a mere lender.
