The 1974 Valcartier explosion that the military attempted to forget

Intentionally Swept Under the Rug: The Tragic, Forgotten Tale of the Valcartier Grenade Incident · 14:30 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: On a rainy July afternoon in Quebec, a safety lecture turned into a deadly catastrophe. This video examines the Valcartier Grenade incident, exploring how a single live munition hidden among inert training aids caused a tragedy that was quickly obscured by the military establishment.

During a lecture on explosives safety at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, Captain Jean-Claude Giroux presented various brightly-coloured, inert ordnance dummies to a group of Army Cadets. Despite the presence of an olive green M-61 fragmentation grenade that resembled a live weapon, the error went unnoticed until 2:17 PM, when the device detonated.

The blast killed six cadets and injured 54 others. While the event remains the most significant tragedy in the history of the Army Cadets, the military's response was to move on rapidly, leaving the psychological impact on survivors largely unaddressed.
