‘Is it in Pevsner?’: A Short History of the ‘Buildings of …' Series - Charles O'Brien · 58:54 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Charles O’Brien explores the history of the Pevsner Architectural Guides, a monumental series that transformed how we understand the built environment. From its 1947 conception to the 2024 completion of a full series update, discover the story behind the books that became an essential companion for every architectural enthusiast.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902–1983) arrived in England in 1934 after fleeing Nazi Germany. A scholar with an omnivorous interest in architecture, he was struck by the perceived inadequacy of existing guides. His response was the 'Buildings of...' series, which began in 1951 with volumes on Cornwall, Middlesex, and Nottinghamshire. Originally planned as 46 volumes covering England, the project grew into a 56-volume collection that now encompasses Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

The series was defined by Pevsner’s rigorous work ethic and a unique, county-by-county approach. In 2024, the project reached a significant milestone: every book in the English series has now been fully revised and updated. Charles O’Brien, former joint Series Editor, reflects on this achievement and the enduring legacy of a work that remains an unrivalled reference for both ancient and modern architecture.
