How a refugee from Nazi Germany became the definitive chronicler of Britain's built environment

‘Is it in Pevsner?’: A Short History of the ‘Buildings of …' Series - Charles O'Brien · 58:54 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s architectural guides transformed how we see our surroundings. Conceived in 1947, this monumental series grew from a modest trio of paperbacks into a comprehensive, twice-completed survey of British and Irish architecture. It remains the gold standard for anyone asking the iconic question: Is it in Pevsner?

Nikolaus Pevsner, born in Leipzig in 1902, arrived in England in 1934 after being forced from his academic post in Germany due to his Russian-Jewish ancestry. His initial impressions of English architecture were marked by a perceived backwardness compared to the Continent, and he found existing travel guides, such as Baedeker, inadequate for serious study. His transition to a new life in London was difficult, involving various roles, including working as a buyer for furniture designer Gordon Russell.

The ambitious project that would define his legacy began in 1947. The first three volumes, covering Cornwall, Middlesex, and Nottinghamshire, were published by Penguin Books in 1951. Pevsner’s work ethic was legendary; he sought to document the architecture of England county by county. By the time the original cycle of forty-six volumes concluded with Staffordshire in 1974, the series had become an essential reference for architectural enthusiasts, cementing the phrase Is it in Pevsner? in the national lexicon.

The project has evolved significantly since Pevsner’s death in 1983. While revision began during his lifetime, the entire series has now been fully updated, a milestone reached in 2024. The scope has expanded beyond the original English focus to include Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, now totaling 56 volumes. This ongoing effort, maintained by successors like Charles O’Brien, ensures that the guides remain a unique, unrivalled companion to understanding both ancient and modern architecture, fulfilling a vision that few could have imagined at the series' inception.
