From department store clerk to poetic icon: the enduring legacy of Jacques Prévert
In short: Jacques Prévert was a French poet and screenwriter whose work defined poetic realism. Though he initially despised writing in school, he became a central figure in the Surrealist movement and a prolific collaborator, crafting legendary films and verses that remain staples in French education and global popular culture today.
Born in 1900 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Jacques Prévert followed an unconventional path to literary fame. After completing his primary education, he left school to work at the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché. His early life was interrupted by military service during the First World War, after which he served in the Near East. Despite his childhood disdain for writing, he eventually joined the Rue du Château group alongside Raymond Queneau and Marcel Duhamel, becoming an active participant in the Surrealist movement.
Prévert’s influence extended deeply into cinema and politics. He was a key member of the Groupe Octobre theater company, using his craft to support the Popular Front’s left-wing causes, a commitment he maintained throughout his life, including a 1971 poem supporting Angela Davis. His screenwriting career produced masterpieces like the 1945 film Les Enfants du Paradis, which earned him an Oscar nomination. He also maintained a lifelong creative partnership with animator Paul Grimault, culminating in their work on the film Le Roi et l'Oiseau, released posthumously in 1980.
His poetry, most notably collected in the 1946 volume Paroles, captures the essence of post-war Paris and everyday life. His verses have been set to music by composers like Joseph Kosma and performed by icons ranging from Édith Piaf to Nat King Cole. Works like 'Les feuilles mortes' have transcended borders, appearing in countless translations and adaptations. Prévert died in 1977 in Omonville-la-Petite, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be widely taught in schools and celebrated worldwide.
