How a group of pilgrims' protectors became a global banking empire

In short: The Knights Templar were born from a desperate need for safety. Originally established to shield Christian pilgrims from bandits and wild beasts, they evolved into a formidable military and financial powerhouse. Their rise was so spectacular that it eventually provoked the envy of kings and led to their dramatic downfall.

The order emerged in the aftermath of the First Crusade (1095–99). While the Crusader states were established, they lacked the military strength to secure the territory. Pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem faced extreme dangers, with diaries describing corpses left on roadsides by raiders. During the period of late 1119 or early 1120, Hugh de Payns and eight or nine French knights pledged to create a religious group for guarding pilgrims.

The group received quarters in a wing of the royal palace in Jerusalem, specifically in the area of the former Temple of Solomon, which gave them their name. They were initially supported by many secular and religious leaders. By 1128, they received official sanction at the Council of Troyes. Their growth was further fueled by Bernard of Clairvaux, who defended the order against critics and helped establish its reputation as a model for other military orders.

However, their immense wealth and influence eventually sparked intense opposition from rival orders. The order faced allegations of blasphemy and was held responsible for the defeat of Crusaders in the Holy Land. This culminated in their destruction by France’s King Philip IV. While modern fiction often focuses on myths like the Holy Grail, the historical reality was a complex transition from a small band of protectors to an international banking pioneer.

Today, the Templars remain a subject of fascination, often conflated with pseudo-history in popular media. While their actual history involves complex logistics and military strategy, their legacy continues to influence how we perceive the intersection of faith, warfare, and finance.
