In short: Tracing its roots to the First Crusade, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem remains a prestigious Catholic institution. Today, it counts 30,000 members worldwide, dedicated to supporting the Christian presence in the Holy Land under the direct protection of the Pope, who serves as its sovereign.

The order’s origins are deeply intertwined with the medieval defense of Jerusalem. Following the city's capture in 1099, a community of canons was established to maintain the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, protected by a dedicated group of soldiers known as the Milites Sancti Sepulcri. King Baldwin I formalized their structure in 1103, creating a feudal institution that received papal recognition in 1113. This group is considered one of the oldest chivalric orders, predating the formation of the Knights Templar.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the order evolved alongside the shifting political landscape of the Holy Land. Even after the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, the tradition of knighthood persisted. For centuries, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land managed these enrollments, dubbing pilgrims as knights in solemn ceremonies. While Pope Innocent VIII attempted to suppress the order in 1489, Pope Alexander VI restored its independence in 1496, centralizing authority under the papacy. This shift ensured the order's survival as a distinct entity, separate from other military orders of the era.

Today, the order operates as an internationally recognized chivalric body with headquarters in Rome. Its modern mission focuses on humanitarian and spiritual support for Christians in the Holy Land. The title of Grand Master, currently held by Fernando Filoni since 2019, oversees 60 lieutenancies globally. While its medieval predecessors were defined by military defense and feudal service, the modern order maintains its heritage through the preservation of ancient traditions, such as the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine, designated by Pope John Paul II in 1994.

The order’s history is marked by resilience, surviving the dissolution of the Crusader states and the suppression of its monastic branches. While some medieval houses, such as those in Miechów, persisted into the 19th century, the order successfully transitioned into a modern, global organization. It remains a unique bridge between the ancient world of crusading chivalry and contemporary Catholic institutional life.
