How do we see inside the human body without ever breaking the skin?

In short: For centuries, doctors were forced to diagnose internal ailments without seeing inside the body, as human tissue is opaque to visible light. In his 1975 Christmas Lectures, Heinz Wolff demonstrated how electromagnetic radiation and mechanical vibrations allow us to peer beneath the surface and map our internal biological systems.

Before the turn of the century and the advent of X-rays, medical practitioners faced the immense challenge of diagnosing faults within the complex human body while it remained entirely opaque. Because tissue and bone block visible light, traditional observation is impossible. However, by utilizing different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, we can penetrate these layers to reconstruct visible images of what lies beneath.

X-rays have long been the standard, though early versions were limited to producing simple shadow pictures where dense structures obscured finer details. Modern advancements, specifically computer-aided X-ray scanning that constructs images point by point, have revolutionized this process. Beyond X-rays, gamma-rays emitted by radioactive isotopes offer another diagnostic window. When these isotopes are introduced into the body, they accumulate in specific organs, allowing equipment to capture images of their distribution. Similarly, infra-red radiation acts as a thermal map; because it is emitted from the skin based on surface temperature, it can highlight inflammation or areas with poor blood supply.

Ultrasound provides a distinct approach, relying not on radiation but on mechanical vibrations at high frequencies. By pulsing a beam of ultrasound into the body, clinicians can measure the time it takes for echoes to return from boundaries between materials with different sound velocities. By moving this beam across the surface, it is possible to generate a detailed image of a specific slice of the patient. Each of these methods relies on different physical properties, providing unique perspectives on the body's interior without requiring invasive procedures.
